Back to the roots, Senegal
8 DAYS
Next dates: January 13-20, 2027
4-6 participants
Escape the comfort of the familiar and immerse yourself in the rhythm of life in rural West Africa. Discover the village of Abéné, where challenges are met with joy, generosity and resilience.
Take seven days to return to the source of humanity for a once-in-a-lifetime, unique and transformational journey.
This presents a unique opportunity for those who have always dreamed of visiting Africa but are unsure of where to start. It's a chance to delve into the wisdom and richness of African culture, taking a respite to appreciate the moment and embrace the genuine warmth and friendliness of the Senegalese people.
Drawing inspiration from the land of 'Teranga,' the one invaluable lesson I've learned from these amicable people is to embrace the present, to live in the now, as tomorrow is 'inchallah'—a concept reminding us that tomorrow is yet to unfold.
Participate in African dance classes, or if you prefer, indulge in drumming lessons, meet the people, engage in a traditional ritual, visit the school and, for those seeking a deeper experience, Catherine suggests starting the day with meditation and participating in active breathwork group sessions. Like everything in our program, feel free to choose activities that resonate with you. Curious about breathwork? Find more information here: https://myhappyretreats.com/sessions/
Discover the allure of stunning beaches, picturesque sunsets, and vibrant markets in Abéné and Kafountine. The village tailor is ready to craft magnificent, custom-made dresses, and accessories to enhance your experience.
This retreat offers ample time for relaxation, set in the tranquility of a small village. While we suggest some optional activities outlined below, our primary focus is on slowing down, aligning with the rhythms of Africa, and unwinding from our usual hectic lives.

General information
Languages:
The national language in Senegal is Wolof, and many people also speak French. Catherine speaks French, Spanish, English, Italian, and German.
Flights and Airports:
The closest airport to Abéné is Banjul (in The Gambia). We recommend flying with Brussels Airlines or Vueling to Banjul.
If you choose to fly with TAP or Royal Air Maroc, please be aware that the border between Gambia and Senegal closes at 22:00 each night. In this case, you would need to either stay overnight in Gambia or return to the border the next day to get your passport stamped (we can organise this for you).
Entry Requirements for The Gambia and Senegal:
No formal visa is required for Swiss or most European citizens to enter Senegal and The Gambia. However, a valid passport is required — it must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned exit date from the country.
Vaccinations and Insurance:
Vaccinations are a personal choice. We encourage you to consult your healthcare provider for recommendations prior to traveling.
We also strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. This insurance should cover medical emergencies, accidents, trip cancellations, and personal liability.
Transfers:
The drive from Banjul Airport to Abéné takes about 1.5 hours — although this can vary depending on how quickly the border crossing goes.
Our trusted driver, Moussa, will meet you at the airport. He speaks English and is very reliable. He also knows the full border administration process and will assist you smoothly.
Departure Tax:
A 20 Euro tax is required at Banjul Airport for both entry and exit. It is advisable to bring the correct amount of cash for both the border and the airport.
Another way to travel to Abéné, Southern Senegal is via Dakar, followed by a connecting flight to Cap Skirring or Ziguinchor, or by taking an overnight boat (a beautiful experience!) to Ziguinchor (Tuesdays & Fridays). Please note that the last flight of the day from Dakar to Cap Skirring is around 17:00. The drive from Cap Skirring to Abéné takes approximately 3 hours; from Ziguinchor to Abéné, slightly less.
Dakar can also be a wonderful starting or ending point for your journey. We highly recommend visiting Gorée Island, where enslaved people were once held before being transported across the Atlantic. The Museum of Humanity is also a must-see.
The boat trip from Dakar down to Abéné is a beautiful experience — and you may even spot dolphins along the way! We are happy to advise and help organise this part of your trip.
